Miles’s Song (Alice McGill)

The Year is 1851, and twelve-year-old Miles feels lucky. Instead of working in the fields, he is being trained as a house servant. But after he is accused of breaking the house rules, Miles is sent to the “breaking ground,” where slave drivers try to crush the spirit of disobedient slaves with work whips. There Miles makes friends with Elijah— an older slave who can read and write and knows story’s of the land up north. Listening to Elijah, miles discovers he wants to be more then a slave. He wants to learn to read and write, and he hopes one day he will be free.
